ARRI Alexa 4.0 Software Update

ARRI Alexas are everywhere here in Europe, shooting features, television specials and commercials. A busy camera assistant, who prefers to remain anonymous, had this to say about Alexa’s ubiquity, “It’s the green button and it beeps when you start. It behaves like familiar friends–Arriflex film cameras.” You can now upgrade your Alexa to software version 4.0. A full description is… read more…

Alexa at Cine Gear

At Cine Gear Expo, it felt like Alexa Expo. ARRI Alexa cameras were everywhere. They were as ubiquitous as Canon 5D and RED cameras that populated previous Expos. Alexas were so busy on shows that some exhibitors at Cine Gear had to sub-rent or ship from Europe. Never before have so many cameras been built each month on Tuerkenstrasse in… read more…

Cine Gear Expo 2011

With a week to digest Cine Gear Expo, along with the delicious In-N-Out burgers, it’s as risky to analyze the trends we saw on Paramount’s New York Streets as it is to augur the whims of Wall Street. Nevertheless, here goes. But first we need to talk about art and politics. Equipment is getting cheaper, labor is getting more expensive,… read more…

Interview with Martin Prillmann of ARRI

Martin Prillmann is Managing Director of ARRI. We talked at NAB about cameras, concepts, cinematography and ALEXA. Jon Fauer: Why you think the ALEXA is so successful? Why did it hit such a nerve? Martin Prillmann: A couple of things came together. When we introduced the ALEXA in 2009, there were several different approaches to digital cinematography. We, at ARRI,… read more…

ARRI ALEXA M

One of the things we did not cover in our pre-NAB FDTimes was ALEXA M–an ALEXA whose sensor head is separated from body for more flexible permutations of 3D, 2D, Steadicam, remote and rig shots. On April 11, ARRI announced a cooperative partnership with the CAMERON – PACE Group (CPG) in development of the ALEXA M camera system. Above, left to right:… read more…

Oli at NAB 2011

Sony’s theme was “Believe Beyond HD.” The Digital Cinema Society’s seminar was titled, “3D, 4K and beyond.” We saw plenoptic lenses selectively adjusting focus within a scene. We saw the GoPro 3D camera on a model helicopter. NAB 2011 was well beyond HD. Attendance was up, along with activity on the show floor.  It could be a reflection of a… read more…

Believe Beyond 4K

NAB can be a weathervane, sometimes pointing where we’re headed. Sometimes taking us on detours. How many NABs proclaimed HD was coming, was here, was now? The big deal for me at NAB2011 was life beyond HD, beyond 2K. I think we’re heading into a 4K world faster than we expected. Of course, RED predicted this long ago. But, when… read more…

ARRI ALEXA Optical Viewfinder?

Here’s an intriguing pre-NAB tease we’ve been cleared to sneek-peak from pages 24-25 of our upcoming Film and Digital Times April 2011 NAB Edition. Could it be the third Alexa Sibling? The wicked leaked picture sure looks like an optical viewfinder, an ALEXA handle, and an ALEXA wireless control antenna. The rest of the camera will be revealed on April 11,… read more…
