All Roads Lead to CVP

CVP has been doing business for 30 years in the United Kingdom and Europe. Now they have opened a veritable playground for camera crews in a unique showroom in Newman Street, London. Their CVP Fitzrovia townhouse is called CVP Creative Experience and has five floors of production equipment from major manufacturers, including Sony, Canon, ARRI, RED, ZEISS, Panasonic, Blackmagic and many more.

With NAB 2019 approaching, it’s good to review CVP’s impressive showing at BSC Expo 2019. Their exhibit serves as a model for many expos to come. The exhibit area was thoughtfully laid out–with lots of space and room to move. There was a lens bar, Macro area with little live creatures, studio setup area on tripods and heads, handheld arena, gimbal and drone park, monitor wall, and an enormous bar and lounge area. read more…

RED 8K HELIUM Super35mm Cameras

RED Digital Cinema starts shipping two new Super35 8K HELIUM Sensor Cameras today. RED WEAPON 8K S35 is the top-of-the line model featuring the new HELIUM sensor. This model offers a sensor upgrade path to RED DRAGON 8K VV sensor when available. RED EPIC-W 8K S35 comes in a black magnesium and aluminum alloy body. It has the same HELIUM sensor as the WEAPON 8K S35, shoots 8K (8192×4320) up to 30 fps, with data rates to 275 MB/s and 6:1 REDCODE RAW at full 8K 24 fps. Both models let you grab 35.4 megapixel stills from the 8K video. read more…

Interview With RED’s Jarred Land – Episode 2

This is Episode 2 of “Interviews with Jarred” about RED Digital Cinema, the state of the industry, large format, and more. Another sequel in this saga is inevitable. I expect Episode 3 will include more about RED Helium 8K S35 3.65 micron pixel sensors.

Jarred Land, Pres of RED

Here’s a preview of one of the featured interviews in the September IBC Edition of Film and Digital Times: with Jarred Land, President of RED Digital Cinema. At NAB, RED fired a Full Frame warning shot across the bow of the industry. Their RED Weapon 8K FF camera, due later this year, prompted a flurry of articles in our big 120-page Double Issue 71-72 about lenses that fit, cameras to come, and stuff to see. read more…

Regarding RED 20×40

Keep calm and keep all your current lenses.

RED’s Weapon 8K, introduced at NAB, is an important new camera expected later this year. The good news is that all current cine lenses will fit, will work, and will remain relevant for a long time. The other good news is that most full frame still lenses will also fit. It’s not so much about the 8K. Yes, it’s an 8K camera, but it will also do 4K in Super 35 and Full Frame. What’s important is the sensor size — 21.60 x 40.96 mm. read more…

RED Weapon 8K

History repeats. RED again is shaking up the industry. Even more compelling than the concept of 8K, for me, is the physical size of the new sensor. The Weapon 8K sensor will accept so many lenses: full frame 24×36 format, and all current 35mm cine (18x24mm), 16mm lenses, and so on. The Weapon 8K will have a sensor around 20mm high x 40mm wide. Vittorio Storaro,… read more…

RED Dragons in Paris

RVZ Rentals in Paris had their new RED Carbon Fiber Dragons at the AFC Micro Salon the other day. One was dangling from a MoVi and fitted with Leica Summicron-C primes (they cover the >34mm 6K image circle).   Back at the RVZ shop, Samuel Renollet showed the Dragon with Leica mount and his Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1.0 Still Camera… read more…

Dragons and the Chocolate Factory

It was like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for camera geeks at NAB. South Lower Hall had a working RED camera assembly area,  complete with clean room, sensor installation, nitrogen freezing and vibrating QC. RED Epics were upgraded on the spot to the new Dragon 6K sensor. It was one of the hits of the show and demonstrated an innovative… read more…

REDRAY 4K

It’s December 8, 2012. Do you know where your content is? Not where they predicted. Neighborhood DVD stores are gone. Blockbuster who? Netflix by mail does not gratify instantly, and stuttery streaming incites screaming. Any movie, anytime, anywhere is still a startup light at the end of a tunnel. Where have all the DVDs (and Blu-rays) gone? Pogue and pundits… read more…

Epic Rain Covers

Elaine Fasula and crew at Ombre have created a new rain cover for RED Epic and Scarlet cameras. Made of breathable waterproof fabric and see-through material, you should never leave your studio without an Ombre rain cover. Come to think of it, they could come in handy even in a studio when the roof leaks or the sprinklers sprinkle. This… read more…

RED Scarlet

Once upon a time, Scarlet was a camera on the development roadmap of Red Digital Cinema with a 3K 2/3” sensor and a fixed zoom lens. Delivery deadlines were pushed back until this past summer when all news of the camera ceased. Some wondered aloud if the camera would happen at all. Then RED scheduled a delivery announcement for Scarlet… read more…

Oli at NAB 2011

Sony’s theme was “Believe Beyond HD.” The Digital Cinema Society’s seminar was titled, “3D, 4K and beyond.” We saw plenoptic lenses selectively adjusting focus within a scene. We saw the GoPro 3D camera on a model helicopter. NAB 2011 was well beyond HD. Attendance was up, along with activity on the show floor.  It could be a reflection of a… read more…

Believe Beyond 4K

NAB can be a weathervane, sometimes pointing where we’re headed. Sometimes taking us on detours. How many NABs proclaimed HD was coming, was here, was now? The big deal for me at NAB2011 was life beyond HD, beyond 2K. I think we’re heading into a 4K world faster than we expected. Of course, RED predicted this long ago. But, when… read more…

RED and Band Pro

RED and Band Pro are up to something. They just announced a 10:30 am press conference on Monday, April 11 at the Red Digital Cinema Booth (SL6220). I can only guess what these enfants terribles are planning: perhaps something to do with famous lenses.
