ARRI Alexa now supports Apple’s new ProRes 4444 XQ codec. This is now the highest quality version of ProRes — with a 1:4.5 compression ratio and a data rate of around 500 Mbps. (In comparison, ProRes 4444 had a compression of 1:6.8 and a data rate of 330 Mbps.) Final Cut Pro version 10.1.2 handles ProRes 4444 XQ. Apple 2880 x1800 Retina Display
Apple’s eye-popping 2880 x 1800 Retina Display for the new 15-in MacBook Pro was announced today at the WWDC. Thats 220 pixels-per-inch, and higher resolution than anything you’re watching on your brand-new 60-inch rapidly obsolescing HDTV. Apple says the new MacBook Pro 15-inch Retina display has more than 5 million pixels, which is 3 million more than a comparably-sized HD… read more…

iPhone 1080p
Apple’s new iPhone 4S has a CMOS sensor that takes stills up to 3264 x 2448 pixels and 1080p video, with digital image stabilization. Although I thought that things with ringtones can’t be good cameras, this might be different. The new iPhone’s camera has an 8-megapixel sensor. That’s 60% more than the iPhone 4. The CMOS sensor is 73% more… read more…

FDTimes on iPad?
An audience larger than Avatar? Sales greater than 1.6 billion? Not since Moses has there been greater fanfare for a tablet. And deservedly so. Steve Jobs introduced Apple’s iPad today. Martin A. Nisenholtz, senior vice president of digital operations for The New York Times, demonstrated a Times app for iPad. I’d very much like to hear from readers of Film and… read more…
