“A Beautiful Planet” – Canon, IMAX

Three Canon EOS C500 4K Digital Cinema Cameras and two EOS-1D C cameras were sent to the International Space Station for the IMAX production A Beautiful Planet. FDTimes discussed the technique and technology of this production with James Neihouse, ASC and Marsha Ivins, along with Tim Smith and Leigh Nofi of Canon. As Variety wrote, “Short of putting Emmanuel Lubezki through Astronaut training, it’s difficult to imagine more rapturously beautiful images of the Earth from orbit than those supplied by A Beautiful Planet, the latest collaboration between IMAX and NASA.” read more…

Panasonic 4K 35mm VariCam

Panasonic held a pre-NAB press conference today in New York. Canon 4K Reference Monitor

Canon demonstrated the new DP-V3010 4K Reference Monitor in their 4K theater at Tokyo Headquarters today.  It’s a 30-inch 4K IPS LCD flat panel display with the jaw-dropping ability to exactly match its mates on set, in grading suites around the world, as well as simultaneously running projectors and monitors. Apple 2880 x1800 Retina Display

Apple’s eye-popping 2880 x 1800 Retina Display for the new 15-in MacBook Pro was announced today at the WWDC. Thats 220 pixels-per-inch, and higher resolution than anything you’re watching on your brand-new 60-inch rapidly obsolescing HDTV. Oli at NAB 2011

Sony’s theme was “Believe Beyond HD.” The Digital Cinema Society’s seminar was titled, “3D, 4K and beyond.” We saw plenoptic lenses selectively adjusting focus within a scene. Believe Beyond 4K

NAB can be a weathervane, sometimes pointing where we’re headed. Sometimes taking us on detours. How many NABs proclaimed HD was coming, was here, was now?
