Interview with Leica’s Dr. Andreas Kaufmann

I first met Dr Andreas Kaufmann at the Pacific Palisades home of Otto Nemenz two years ago. “We have an interesting story to tell you,” Otto said, as Santa Monica Bay glistened in glorious magic hour light. “It’s about Leica cine lenses.” The saga involved several degrees of separation that began more than 30 years ago, with Otto and his… read more…

International Leica Society

“Shooting with a Leica is like a long tender kiss, like firing an automatic pistol, like an hour on the analyst’s couch,” said Henri Cartier-Bresson. He should have added, “…and like spending a weekend with the LHSA International Leica Society.” Two hundred Leica fanatics converged on Pittsburgh last week to try new equipment, attend lectures, shoot pictures, swap tales and… read more…

Leica M9 and Noctilux f/0.95

This is not your father’s Leica. But many things about the Leica M9 feel familiar. The process of taking pictures is distinctly different. The mechanics are elegant. The controls are intuitive. Turn it on. Set your aperture. Compose. Focus. Shoot. You think more about composition. You wait for the perfect moment. My father had a drawer full of M2 and… read more…

Oli at NAB 2011

Sony’s theme was “Believe Beyond HD.” The Digital Cinema Society’s seminar was titled, “3D, 4K and beyond.” We saw plenoptic lenses selectively adjusting focus within a scene. We saw the GoPro 3D camera on a model helicopter. NAB 2011 was well beyond HD. Attendance was up, along with activity on the show floor.  It could be a reflection of a… read more…

NEX-5 Leica

The prime lens packaged with Sony’s NEX-5 digital still camera is a 16mm f2.8 E-mount (18 mm flange focal depth). But, I wanted faster, sharper, manual. From my collection of Leica M lenses, the venerable “quintessential rangefinder Ernst Leitz Summicron 50 mm f2.0 was a perfect match. It conveniently collapses for unobtrusive transport–although anything with a Leica logo is hardly… read more…
