FGV PL1D: Canon EOS 1D with PL Mount

FGV Schmidle have done it: added a PL mount and modified Canon’s EOS 1D MKIV. The mirror cage is replaced by a new FGV stainless steel sensor carrier that minimizes flange focal depth variation from temperature changes. The Canon 1D Mk IV is especially interesting for cinematographers because its 16 Megapixel APS-H sensor (27.9 x 18.6 mm) comes closest to the… read more…

Canon EOS 60D

Chuck Westfall took me through the new Canon EOS 60D at Canon Expo 2010. With the same 18-megapixel image sensor as the 7D and the T2i, it’s positioned between the two. The 60D has  a large Vari-Angle 3-inch LCD screen with 1,040,000 dot/VGA resolution and anti-reflective and smudge-resistant coatings for bright viewing from any angle. Another first for the EOS system… read more…

Canon 4K Camera

The 4K trail accelerates. Introducting Canon’s small 5.5 lbs, Pixie, er…Vixia size 4K camera. 2/3″ CMOS single sensor. Frame rates above 60 fps. It was working, displaying a crisp and beautiful image on the new 4K Canon monitors. It’s modestly tucked away in a corner. The hairdryer shape and fused 24-480 zoom (35mm equivalent, 20x f1.8-3.8) belie this camera’s potential. I… read more…

Canon’s Huge Sensors

At Canon Expo 2010, Canon is showing what it believes is the world’s largest CMOS image sensor: 202 x 205 mm. Because its expanded size enables greater light-gathering capability, the sensor is capable of capturing images in approximately one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a Canon professional-model digital SLR camera. In case you’re having trouble finding lenses for this… read more…

Canon 7D FGV-PL at CSC

We tested the new FGV PL-mounted Canon EOS 7D at ARRI/CSC today. Solid as a block–which is how the mount is machined–from the same custom block of metal that holds the CMOS sensor. FGV removed the entire mirror and optical finder assembly, and replaced it with theirs. This saves weight, and as you can see, supports a big ZEISS Master… read more…

PL Mount for Canon 7D from FGV

FGV Schmidle is a respected rental house in Munich and Berlin, with more than 35 years’ experience. Their PL retrofits for Canon EOS 7D HDSLR cameras appear to be the most sophisticated yet; we’ll be testing them next week. The excellent idea is how they’ve attached the PL mount to the base, which adds rigidity and provides three 3/8 x… read more…

Hot Rod Mods Canon EOS PL

Adapter or Surgery There are two ways to put a PL mount on a Canon EOS camera. The painless way is a PL-to-Canon mount adapter, leaving the mirror and electronics of the camera intact.
