Canon 17-120 T2.9-3.9 w/ Servo Grip

This is Canon’s first 35mm zoom lens with servo handgrip for documentary, handheld or ENG. Canon’s 17-120 mm T2.9-3.9 zoom seems impossibly small for a lens that can deliver superb image quality with so much range. The servo focus/iris/zoom handgrip detaches with 3 screws. When re-installed, there’s no need for manual re-alignment. I tried out a prototype 17-120 at AbelCine… read more…

Canon C300 Cameras win Cannes

Canon C300 Cameras shot the Cannes Film Festival Palme D’Or winner, Blue is the Warmest Color (La Vie d’Adèle). Two cameras were provided by PhotoCineRent in Paris. Because production lasted 4 or 5 months, the cameras were purchased by the producers instead of rented. Canon Cinema EOS Lens Charts

A well-respected rental house manager called today in a huff. And in a hurry. “You announce cameras and lenses that won’t be available for 3 to 6 months. My clients can’t wait. They’re ready to shoot now. I need more lenses.” Like a new iPhone or iPad, new models are inevitable and inevitably arriving faster,  sooner. Can you afford to… read more…

Photokina 2012 Review and Slideshow

Photokina took place in Cologne from September 18-23. The theme, for me, was full-frame format: 24 x 36 mm, some in bodies lighter and smaller than their APS-C predecessors. Leica introduced the new M, with Leica-designed 24-megapixel CMOS sensor, live view, HD video and compatibility with all previous M rangefinder lenses. Canon’s new 6D has a 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor…. read more…

Canon EOS M

APS-C and 35mm cine formats are both similar in size. Perhaps 118 years of exposure and acclimatization to a 22 x 16 mm aperture has instilled a sensibility satisfied by familiar depth of field and look. Which may be why Canon’s new EOS M pocket point-and-shoot is APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm). (By the way,  35mm Super35 is 24.9 x 18.66 mm.)… read more…
