Canon 5D 10 Year Anniversary
Hard to believe–Canon will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the EOS 5D camera. It was launched in September 2005: an affordable DSLR with 35mm full-frame 24×36 mm CMOS sensor. In November 2008, Canon shipped the second-generation EOS 5D Mark II. This was the first Canon EOS DSLR camera that could not only take stills, but could also shoot Full HD video. “Dheepan” Cannes Palme D’Or
Éponine Momenceau was the cinematographer on Jacques Audiard’s “Dheepan.” “Dheepan” won the coveted Palme D’Or — first prize at Cannes. “Dheepan” was shot with a Sony F55 from Panavision Paris. Eponine said, “I like the fact that it is a lightweight, comfortable, shoulder resting camera. We did tests in advance, and I thought it had the best colors for faces, with the best color gamut, and color space. We shot in spherical widescreen with Cooke S3 lenses and an Angenieux Optimo 24-290 zoom.”
Deakins’ Cannes Angenieux Award
Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC was honored at Cannes 2015 with the Pierre Angenieux ExcelLens Lifetime Achievement Award for Cinematography.
A convoy of Cannes cars from the Majestic Hotel to Festival Hall, Red Carpet and stairway of the stars, reception on the Mouton Cadet terrace overlooking the harbor, welcome by Angenieux President Pierre Andurand and presentation of the award — an Angenieux Optimo 45-120. Denis Villeneuve on working with Roger Deakins
At 6:30pm Friday, May 22, Roger Deakins ascended the red carpet at Cannes, on his way to receiving the Pierre Angénieux Excellens Award for Cinematography. During the cocktail reception prior to the event, Denis Villeneuve discussed working with Roger. Denis was Director of “Sicario,” which opened at Cannes. (Variety’s Scott Foundas wrote, “Villeneuve has once again delivered an impeccably well-crafted film, not least in Deakins’ arresting lensing.”) read more…
Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC Interview about Cannes ExcelLens Cinematography Award
This year is the 80th anniversary of Angénieux. Three years ago, the company became an official partner of the Cannes Film Festival and established the “Pierre Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography” Award and Ceremony. It’s named after the founder of the company, Pierre Angénieux, whose designs and inventions in zoom lenses have been used by cinematographers since the first Angénieux 16mm format 17-68 mm f/2.2 1956 was built. The first 35mm Angénieux Zoom was the 35-140 f/3.5 in 1960. Download our Angénieux History 12 MB PDF here. Tonight Roger will be honored by the Cannes Festival, by Angénieux President Pierre Andurand, colleagues, and some of the many directors and actors with whom he’s worked. Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC will receive the Pierre Angénieux Lifetime Achievement Award for Cinematography at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, May 22. Pierre Andurand, President of Angenieux, explained the selection process. A committee makes recommendations based on body of work and artistic achievement, and the selection is made by organizers of the Cannes Festival. High Noon at Cannes with CST
The CST (Commission superieure technique de l’image et du son) supervises the technical details and projection at Cannes. They also host noon time presentations by manufacturers. Today, CST hosted AFFECT (Association des Fabricants Francais d’Equipments Cinematographiques de Tournage.) Ah acronyms. The ZEISS Museum of Optics is open to the public. It’s a beautiful, new, architecturally crisp, white and bright addition to corporate headquarters in Oberkochen, Germany. 288 km from Frankfurt airport (3 hours’ drive) or 184 km from Munich (2 hours), driving time (in parentheses) is a wishful google estimate. Monet Exhibit in Frankfurt
“Monet and the Birth of Impressionism” is an exhibition at Frankfurt’s Staedelmuseum not to be missed. The show has been extended to June 28 because of huge attendance. Try to book tickets online. Panasonic VariCam 35 Factory Tour (PDF)
In January 2012, Panasonic’s professional video factory moved to Okayama, 180 km (111 miles) west of Osaka. The picture above was composited from portraits of every employee. At Okayama, the entire manufacturing process from parts mounting to final assembly takes place on a single floor. This layout improves logistics and speeds production. The new factory has gigantic clean rooms for assembly of optical units in the cameras. Panasonic controls the entire process—making everything from the sensors and optical assemblies to the circuit boards, mechanical parts, housings, and components. read more…
Anamorphic 118 page Review (PDF)
Here’s a 118-page review of anamorphic cinematography from Film and Digital Times articles since 2007. It all began with a visit to Vantage, makers of Hawk Lenses. Peter Martin and Wolfgang Baumler suggested a book on anamorphic, something about which they know quite a lot. This led to more articles over those 8 years, as anamorphic widescreen took off and has been embraced many cinematographers and manufacturers. read more…

NYU VB Cinematography Awards
The Volker Bahnemann Awards for Cinematography are presented each year to an NYU undergraduate and a graduate cinematography student. The award is made possible by generous gifts from ARRI Rental employees and friends. They were presented yesterday evening, May 6, at NYU.
EasyRig Expands
Johan Hellsten is back in Sweden, working on expanded facilities for his EasyRig factory in Umeå, just south of the arctic circle. Response to the NAB introduction of the new EasyRig Vario 5 at 16×9 Inc has been huge, and they are shipping now.

Fast: 40mm T0.95 E-mount
Band Pro showed the new 40 mm T0.9 lens from IB-E Optics at NAB. Klaus Eckerl, Managing Director of IB-E Optics said, “Think of it as a Noctilux style lens for APS-C and Super 35 format.” This is the “video version” of the lens: with geared focus and iris rings. It’s a great companion on Sony’s FS-7 camera with its native E-mount. read more…

Vive le Film
Reports from around the world show that film is alive and well and living and thriving in Tokyo and Paris. Masa Yasumoto of Sanwa reports 4 motion picture film labs in Tokyo, and “We still rent film cameras… and some customers can shoot cheaper on film than with digital cameras.” Alexander Bscheidl called with exciting news from Vantage Paris about their recent workshop with Kodak and Film Factory: “We shot on film in 16mm and 35mm, spherical and anamorphic. The film was processed at Film Factory while we had lunch, and by 2:30 pm we were looking at dailies and grading shortly after that. It was wonderfully quick.” read more…
