Greg Smokler – Teradek – Sci-Tech Award
Greg Smokler is Vice President of Cine Products at Teradek. He grew up in LA, worked as a camera assistant, DP and ICG Local 600 Camera Operator. He was co-founder of Paralinx, the wireless video company, that was acquired by the Vitec Group. Dennis Scully, Focus Puller, said, “With everybody wanting to shoot wide open and super shallow depth of field, it’s not even a matter of choosing the right eye or left eye. It’s whether you want the eyelashes or the eyeball to be sharp. If you’re on something like a 135mm at T1.3 on a tight choker, God help you. If you work with wireless video, chances are that an Amimon chipset is inside. It’s somewhat like computers having the label “Intel Inside.” Amimon designs and provides the proprietary chips and circuits inside most of the wireless products from Teradek, Paralinx and SmallHD, as well as ARRI, Transvideo and other companies. Teradek has acquired Amimon. The official wording is that Amimon Inc has been acquired by The Vitec Group plc. Amimon will be integrated into Vitec’s Creative Solutions division.
Creative Solutions has its headquarters in Southern California and their brands include Teradek, SmallHD, Wooden Camera, Paralinx, Rycote—and now Amimon. Creative Solutions products are used on motion picture, commercial, documentary, television, sports, news, streaming and event productions worldwide. Filming the Solar Eclipse Aug 21
This is the story of Stephen Pizzo’s enthralling preparations to shoot the Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017. This is the first total solar eclipse across the continental United States since 1918. The Moon will pass between the Sun and Earth, blocking the face of the Sun and leaving only its outer atmosphere, or corona, visible in the sky. The epicenter of the total eclipse will be in Carbondale, IL. The project includes a number of firsts that rely on state-of-the-art digital cinema cameras as part of an advanced astro-imaging system built specifically to capture the first US-wide eclipse in a hundred years. read more…
