Vantage Vintage Kinoptik

Vantage Film has a rental office in Saint-Denis, Paris. Now they are re-introducing venerable sets of French glass from the 1950s: 35mm cine format Kinoptik cine lenses, rehoused and rebarreled. These are lenses with a distinct character, unique bokeh, and a kind of swirly, impressionist feel to out-of-focus backgrounds. Worth the Trip

As they say in the Michelin guidebooks, it’s definitely “worth the trip.” There are three very good reasons to visit Weiden, Germany. 1. Have dinner nearby,  in the best restaurant in Germany. Chef Thomas Kellermann is a maestro, presiding over a kitchen surely staffed by muses. 2. Spend the night in recently renovated rooms above the restaurant, in the Relais & Chateau Burg Wernberg. Hawk65 from Vantage Film

On February 9, 2015, Vantage Film announced three new sets of lenses for 65mm format. Since then, other products and pieces of the puzzle have come together. RED introduced the RED Weapon 8K camera, with its 21.60 x 40.96 mm sensor at NAB. ARRI announced an alliance of Alexa 65 with IMAX. I met with Peter Martin in Los Angeles. Peter is CEO of Vantage Film and leads technical development along with CEO Wolfgang Baumler.

A Tale of Two Covers

The Worldwide Edition of FDTimes has been printed in Hollywood, the French Edition has been printed in Paris. Daniel Pearl, ASC graces the cover of the former; Benoit Debie is on the latter.
