Sony α7s 4K Camera

My favorite part of Sony’s annual NAB press conference is the new product  unveiling. This year, it was Mr. Shigeki Ishizuka, Sony Deputy President of Imaging Products (he’s in charge of still and motion picture cameras) who announced the new Sony α7s camera. Saying that the two worlds of consumer and professional imaging are merging, he introduced this third member of… read more…

Sony α7R and α7 full-frame cameras

I think I accidentally stumbled onto a clue as to the direction we’re headed in motion picture cameras. It comes, once again, from the digital still world. Full-frame, format-agnostic sensors. Comfortable with B4, Super16, Super35, Anamorphic, Full frame and many other lenses and aspect ratios. The first hint of this was Leica’s new M camera, with CMOS sensor, live view,… read more…

Sony’s latest  4K camera, PXW-Z100 XDCAM camcorder, shoots HD, QFHD and 4K. With the familiar “Handycam” shape (viewfinder in back, hand inserted between… read more…

GoPro Hero 3

GoPro announced the new Hero 3 for delivery around mid-November. It will do 4K at 15 fps. I expect 4K 24 or 30 fps isn’t far behind. See Filmtools or GoPro websites for details. No more complaining that there won’t be enough 4K content to justify a new Sony 84-inch XBR-84X900 4K LED TV for your home. The only shortage… read more…

Photokina took place in Cologne from September 18-23. The theme, for me, was full-frame format: 24 x 36 mm, some in bodies lighter and smaller than their APS-C predecessors. Leica introduced the new M, with Leica-designed 24-megapixel CMOS sensor, live view, HD video and compatibility with all previous M rangefinder lenses. Canon’s new 6D has a 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor…. read more…

Update: Sony 18-252 mm Zoom

One of the hits of PhotoPlus Expo was a surprise sneak preview of Sony’s amazing new zoom lens for their PMW-F3 Camera. Shown unofficially and “out of competition” to a few cinematographers, the new 18-252 attracted lots of attention on the show floor. With good reason. This is the first 35mm format zoom that I know of with many… read more…
