Tiffen has released the new version 3.0 Tiffen Dfx digital filter suite–a video and still image editing effects software package that is much more than a digital version of a truck full of their famous glass filters.
Tiffen Dfx 3.0 Software premiered at IBC 2011. The Dfx digital filter suite has been popular with cinematographers, photographers, and VFX artists to pre-viz, play with, and post using digital optical filters that can simulate more than 2,000 Tiffen glass filters, specialized lenses, optical lab processes, film grain, color correction, and effects. What’s New in Dfx 3.0? It works and renders faster. There are 10 new Effect Filters.
Rays: Creates realistic light ray effects quickly and easily. Rays can add shafts of light streaming through clouds, rays filtering through a forest canopy, beams of light on a foggy night, or rays shooting through an interior window. Rays adds a striking and dramatic quality to any image.
Color Shadow: Creates a high contrast image overlayed with a gradient, similar to the look and feel of current iPod commercials.
Film Stocks: Simulates 113 different color and black & white photographic film stocks. For the look of old or current film stocks, there are simulations of many of the popular emulsions from Kodak, Fuji, Agfa, Polaroid, and Ilford.
Match: Matches the color, detail, grain, and tone of one image and applies it to another. The ability to match one image to another is a useful tool. We frequently have to match scenes shot under varying lighting conditions, weather, and color temperatures to achieve consistency. Editors often have to combine images from different locations and ensure that they smoothly cut together. Visual effects artists need to combine multiple elements into one seamless composition. Match helps all this.
DeBand removes banding artifacts from an image by smoothing pixels while retaining detail. Banding can occur in blue skies with DSLRs as well as digital cameras.
DeBlock removes square blocking artifacts created by high (often JPEG) compression.
DeNoise removes grain and noise from digital still and video images while retaining detail.
Glow Dark glows and grows dark areas of an image, creating a stylized, dreamy dark glow.
Key Light is a digital gaffer, relighting images with a directional or point light. Changing the lighting after an image has been shot could cause fireworks, but also gives the DP and photographer a chance to fix or enhance their images and create interesting additional lighting effects in post.
Texture can be applied to an image for a stylized look.
Enhanced Multiprocessor Acceleration: Multiprocessor acceleration has been implemented to dramatically speed up the majority of filters. The more processors a machine has, the faster the interaction and rendering.
