At the pre-Photokina Leica event this evening, Dr. Andreas Kaufmann introduced the next Leica M camera: not the anticipated M10, but elegantly, simply “M.” The Leica M has a new 24 Megapixel, full frame 24 x 36 mm CMOS image sensor, which enables Live View and 1080p HD video. This is what we’ve been waiting for. The race is on for the first PL to Leica M adapter, and the first to shoot with Summilux-C cine lenses on a rangefinder camera.
Consider the potential of the Leica M camera for cinema. Just as the 1954 Leica M3 influenced photojournalism, the 2012 Photokina unveiling of the latest M camera could spark new styles in cinematography.
It could be very important for cinema verité, documentaries, news, and unobtrusive drama.
Back to the specs. At the rear, there’s a 3-inch, high-resolution monitor with 920,000 pixels made of tough and scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass.
There are buttons for Live View and new focusing functions.
A new Leica R-Adapter M lets you use most R-Lenses on the camera. The Leica EVF2 electronic viewfinder offers an electronic alternative.
The Leica M will be available in early 2013 in a black or silver chrome finish.
