ProRes RAW, Atomos, Panasonic

Final Cut Pro X gets ProRes RAW in the 10.4.1 update coming from Apple on April 9. It combines  the flexibility and advantages of RAW with the performance (data rates, speed, ease) of ProRes.

ProRes RAW is a new format from Apple that combines significantly lower data rates with the performance of ProRes. You will be able to play full-quality 4K ProRes RAW files on MacBook Pro and iMac systems in real time without rendering. ProRes RAW files are even smaller than ProRes 4444 files. Atomos just announced Final Cut Pro working natively with ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ files as a free update on their Sumo 19 and Shogun Inferno devices.




The Panasonic EVA1 with the new EVA2.0 update will record ProRes RAW to Atomos devices.

Panasonic announced today: “The Panasonic EVA1 can output 10-bit Log-encoded RAW data in 5.7K up to 30 fps, 4K up to 60 fps, and 2K up to 240 fps. From the VariCam LT, Atomos recorders can capture RAW data in 4K up to 60 fps and 2K up to 240 fps. There are two variable bit-rate levels of ProRes RAW being introduced. ProRes RAW HQ and ProRes RAW record at similar data rates as their ProRes video counterparts. This efficiency allows RAW data to be stored in similar memory space as common video files, and Final Cut Pro X can edit and color natively in RAW on a MacBook Pro. ProRes RAW files will also output from Final Cut Pro X to video finishing formats faster than other RAW formats. And Final Cut Pro X now includes increased color correction controls plus support for 3D-LUTs such as Panasonic’s V-Log-to-709 image transform, included in the program.”

Other camera companies are weighing in as we speak: Canon C300 series, Sony FS7 series, DJI (Inspire 2 drone and Zenmuse X7 Super 35mm), etc.
