Chris Doyle Angenieux Award at Cannes

At a black tie event in the Salle Bunuel theater at the Cannes Film Festival, Christopher Doyle HKSC was presented this year’s Pierre Angenieux lifetime achievement award for cinematography. Accepting his prize–an Angenieux Optimo 15-40 T2.6 zoom–Chris said, “This is something I can use every day and will cherish. It’s much better than a statue that sits on a shelf.”

Turning to Ed Lachman ASC in the front row, “I can even rent it to you, Ed Lachman, when I’m not using it.”

The award ceremony was preceded by a reception in the Mouton Cadet roof terrace on top of the festival hall.

The event in the Bunuel Theater was introduced by Pierre Zeni and Thierry Fremaux, Director of Cannes Film Festival. Raphaël Keller, CNC (Centre National du Cinéma) Director of Innovation, and Richard Andry, President of AFC (Association of French Cinematographers) spoke about the role of the cinematographer and the art of cinematography.

Christopher Doyle was welcomed on stage with speeches by Juliette Binoche, Jenny Suen, Olivier Assayas and Frédéric Auburtin.

Chris accepted the Angénieux Optimo 15-40, engraved with his name, with gracious words, “This award means so much more than just an honor for my work . This award has been created by craftsmen and women with precision and care. It’s the bridge between their craft and my endeavor for art that I will be using it every day on every film to come with pride and respect. With this award, Angenieux has passed on to me their excellence, now it’s my responsibility to be excellent in return.”
