Photokina 2012

It’s setup day for vendors and free-range press access at Photokina, the enormous bi-annual photography trade show in Cologne.

I have two words so far: large sensors. The 24 x 36 mm format is popping up everywhere, on new cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and others. Which means that motion picture cameras will be using 24×36 soon. Shallower depth of field, larger lenses–not to worry–although focus-pullers might…

ZEISS has new Compact Prime CP.2 and SLR lenses covering up to 24×36. Schneider has three new 24×36 Xenon lenses, intended for still photography, but with Canon and Nikon DSLR mounts, is PL imminent.

Canon unveiled the new 6D, newly designed with a 20.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with 1080p HD video, in an affordable camera body (around $2099).

Nikon is showing the new D600, at $2099, the less expensive full-frame sibling of the D800.

Sony is putting 24×36 into a pocketable point-and-shoot: the RX1.
Not to be missed: the 2012 exhibit at the Wallraf Museum in Cologne, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the exhibit by Cezanne, Cross, Gaughin, Picasso, van Gogh and other “shockingly modern” artists of 1912.
Here’s a slideshow of brief highlights from Photokina Press Preview.
