Consumer Electronics Show

CES is in hyper-twitter, kicking off four days of annual frenzied introductions in Las Vegas of products that we consumers are expected to spend $681 billion on in the coming year. Those astounding numbers make this year’s record movie box-office of $10.5 billion seem like petty cash. If you’ve ever wondered why there have been over 50 video standards in as many years, you dear conspicuous consumer, are the reason why electronics giants and elfs alike are circling.  As expected, 3D is everywhere: home sets, Blu-Ray players, home-video cameras with two immovable (what-were-they-thinking?) lenses and magic boxes to make 3D out of 2D.

The Samsung NX10 digital still camera, above, will probably not grace the MoMA design collection, but is interesting because it has an APS-C size CMOS sensor, interchangeable lenses and no mirror. Machine shops everywhere: start your bandsaws–it’s like a Micro Four Thirds format camera with an almost 35mm motion picture aperture of 23.4 x 15.6mm. With Live-View and a mere 25.5mm flange focal depth, this may be another candidate for PL to Samsung mount adapter or a total PL mount retrofit. There is no annoying mirror box to remove or major surgery to perform.  Alas, its 14.6 megapixel sensor leaves us with 720p, not 1080p. But, the 3 inch monitor is AMOLED: active matrix organic light emitting diode, with a faster response and 10,000:1 contrast ratio.
