Panasonic LUMIX DC-BGH1

Panasonic calls it a box camera. Perhaps that is too modest a name for the LUMIX DC-BGH1. “Box” reminds me of the first Kodak box camera of 1888. It had a simple fixed lens and lacked controls. “You take the pictures, we do the rest.” Calling the BGH1 a box camera could be like comparing a Jiro (dreams of Sushi) Omakase experience to a box lunch. Yes, the LUMIX BGH1 is boxy on the outside, with sculpturally beveled and rounded edges. It will feel familiar for broadcasting, streaming, multi-cam and IP remote control. But the BGH1 is much more. read more…

Panasonic VariCam LT

Panasonic launched the VariCam LT  — LT as in Lite (Bud Lite, Arricam LT…) It’s a lighter, smaller, lower-priced version of the VariCam 35. Same 4K sensor, same dual native 800/5000 ISO, smaller body. It looks like Mr. Miyagi’s Panasonic team, with Taka Mitsui and Barry Russo and many others, came up with a very appealing camera. The Panasonic VariCam LT (official model number AU-V35LT1G) weighs about 6 lb. It will be at home on Steadicams, rigs, gimbals, drones, cranes, remote heads, handheld or shoulder-resting. It could be an indie A camera or big budget B camera. Actually, with cameras multiplying on big shows, I can imagine it being part of an arsenal of 10-20 cameras ready to roll. read more…

Panasonic Yamagata Lens Factory Tour

Tendo City, Yamagata is a one-hour flight north from Tokyo’s  Haneda Airport. The mountainous area is known for its hot springs, ramen and soba noodles, and factories that make most of Japan’s Shogi (chess) sets. We are here to visit a different kind of factory: Panasonic’s Yamagata Lens Factory. A year earlier, Panasonic’s principal  lens designer Mr. Kazutake Boku had suggested a visit to their optical factory. “It’s like nothing you’ve ever written about before,” he said. So here we are. read more…

Oli at NAB 2011

Sony’s theme was “Believe Beyond HD.” The Digital Cinema Society’s seminar was titled, “3D, 4K and beyond.” We saw plenoptic lenses selectively adjusting focus within a scene. We saw the GoPro 3D camera on a model helicopter. NAB 2011 was well beyond HD. Attendance was up, along with activity on the show floor.  It could be a reflection of a… read more…

Panasonic PL Camera

Panasonic was first out of the gate at NAB with PL-mounted, full-featured camcorder based on the DSLR phenomenon. A prototype of the new Panasonic AG-AF100 Camcorder was… read more…
