Birth of Cinema in Kyoto: 1908

Shinnyo-Do Temple has a monument to the birth of local cinema in Kyoto, Japan. It’s to the left as you face the main temple. The plaque explains: In 1895 the Lumiere brothers developed the Cinematographe in France. Two years later, in 1897, businessman Katsutaro Inabata brought it to Japan and the first projections took place here in Japan. Vantage Vintage Kinoptik

Vantage Film has a rental office in Saint-Denis, Paris. Now they are re-introducing venerable sets of French glass from the 1950s: 35mm cine format Kinoptik cine lenses, rehoused and rebarreled. These are lenses with a distinct character, unique bokeh, and a kind of swirly, impressionist feel to out-of-focus backgrounds. Cooke 35-140 Anamorphic Zoom

Cooke Optics has revealed details of their impending Front Anamorphic zoom. It will be 35-140 mm and may begin shipping around NAB 2016. Like the rest of the Cooke Anamorphic/i family, it will be a front anamorphic design, 2x squeeze ratio, with familiar oval bokehs. read more…

Canon Expo: A Very Good Year

Canon Expo takes place every 5 years in select cities around the world: New York, Paris, Tokyo and Shanghai. It was a wonderful display of new technology, science experiments, leading edge products and audacious concepts from Canon’s engineering teams, an intoxicating mix of actual as well as proof of concept technology. There was  an APS-H-size  CMOS sensor with 250 million pixels. Video on a Canon prototype camera showed detail on the Eiffel Tower 11 miles away. This year we were treated to an 8K camera and lens.  Like the mountain-climber’s phrase, Canon sometimes does things because it’s there…or because they can.
