Canon EF 24-70, 35 mm

Canon has two new still lenses: EF 24-70 mm f/4L IS USM and EF 35 mm f/2 IS USM. They cover the full-frame (24 x 36 mm) still format–good for cameras like 5D, 6D, etc.

The EF 24-70mm f/4  focuses to macro at the long end of the zoom and has image stabilization. The EF 35 mm f/2 has image stabilization.

Canon EF 24–70 mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Optical Image Stabilization

This lens maintains a constant maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the entire zoom range. It has 15 lens elements in 12 groups, including two aspherical and two UD lens elements, and a 9-bladed iris. Macro is engaged with a switch on the lens barrel. Minimum focus distance (MOD) is 0.2 m/7.9-inches.  What’s the point of image stabilization in a relatively short lens? It provides the equivalent of four extra f-stops. So if you normally wouldn’t shoot at less than 1/1000 th second handheld at 70 mm, Canon’s image stabilization might let you dare to venture 4 stops slower: 1/60.

The Ultrasonic Motor (USM) provides quiet, fast autofocus, and has full-time mechanical manual focus that’s enabled even during AF operation. The lens is only 93mm long.

Canon’s EF 24–70 mm f/4L IS USM lens comes with a reversible lens hood. It should be available in December for an approximate retail price of $1,499.

The EF 35mm f/2 IS USM full-frame still lens is compact, lightweight, and has improved image quality at the edges. Mechanics have been improved. Auto Focus is faster and quieter than its predecessor. The lens has Optical Image Stabilization and optional full-time manual focus.

The EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens is expected to ship in December for an approximate retail price of $849.99.
