Canon EOS M

APS-C and 35mm cine formats are both similar in size. Perhaps 118 years of exposure and acclimatization to a 22 x 16 mm aperture has instilled a sensibility satisfied by familiar depth of field and look. Which may be why Canon’s new EOS M pocket point-and-shoot is APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm). (By the way,  35mm Super35 is 24.9 x 18.66 mm.)… read more…

How to Build Leica Summilux-C Lenses

Flippant headline notwithstanding, building Summilux-C lenses is an impressive process. Begin with Christian Skrein’s concept of Leica lenses for motion picture production. Add practical experience from Otto Nemenz, who consulted from the beginning. Get the blessing, vision, and financing from charismatic Leica owner Dr. Andreas Kaufmann. Hire legendary optical designer Iain Neil and equally esteemed mechanical designer Andre de Winter…. read more…

Munich-Oberkochen-Weiden

On the Optical Autobahn: 2 hours northwest to Oberkochen for a quick visit to ZEISS. New products to be announced at IBC and in our IBC-Cinec issue. Gerhard Baier at the wheel: the landscape flies by in fast-forward 240 km/hr (150 mph) mode. Another 2 hours northwest and we’re in Wetzlar at Leica Land–past the vast construction site where Leica is… read more…

Praezisions-Entwicklung Denz

Ottobrunn is a suburb half an hour south of Munich and a half hour north of the Bavarian Alps. It is the epicenter of fine motion picture machining: hometown of P+S Technik and Praezisions-Entwicklung Denz. I’m here to visit Peter Denz, who began his cine equipment work in 1970 and founded the company in 1977. I had always admired, rented and… read more…

Visiting Vantage Film

[nggallery id=12] In the middle ages, the “Golden Street” was a major road between Paris and Prague, by way of Nurnberg. One of the major stops was Weiden–home of Vantage Film. That’s apt, since Vantage has offices in Prague and Paris, with headquarters in Weiden–about 2 hours north of Munich, 2 hours west of Prague, 3 hours south of Berlin…. read more…

Digitale Cinematographie

[nggallery id=11] Some highlights of the Digitale Cinematographie event in Munich included a new cable-cam (actually non-stretch mountaineering rope) rig with Kenyon gyro-stabilized RED Epic from Volker Tittel, Holger Fleig, and Dieter Wurster of CamPilots. Their demo reel showed amazing shots covering distances up to 300′ — through forests, under bridges, and all with very smooth, gliding moves. Klaus Eckerl,… read more…

Leicas at FGV Schmidle

[nggallery id=10] I don’t know if it could be called an opening of the floodgates, but deliveries of Leica Summilux-C lenses are popping up all over the place. Otto Nemenz has taken delivery of more than 25 sets. There were recent sightings in Singapore, a set at Clairmont Camera in Hollywood, TCS in New York, PhotoCineRent Paris, EyeLight Belgium. I… read more…
